Let’s Talk About……Leaving Early

Employer Issue of the Day:

“One of my employees just left early without asking. What should I do?”

It’s an easy situation to catch leaders off-guard, especially when juggling coverage, deadlines, and fairness to the rest of the team. But here’s what I always tell leaders:

Before you discipline, discover.

Get curious, and ask questions. Maybe it was a family emergency, burnout, or simply a miscommunication about expectations. We don’t know the story until we ask (empathy first!).

Here’s a simple HR approach that keeps humanity at the centre:

➡️“Hey, I noticed you left early the other day. Is everything okay?” opens doors and breaks down walls.
➡️ Listen first. Sometimes the issue isn’t the early exit… it’s what led up to it.
➡️ Clarify expectations kindly. Once you understand the “why,” you can realign on the “how” moving forward.
➡️ Follow up expectations with an email. Ensure you have this communication in writing should the situation arise in the future.

When leaders respond with curiosity instead of punishment, they reinforce trust. Remember, good leadership is about helping people feel safe enough to approach you for help.

Not sure when to be firm — and when to be human? 🤔
