Let’s Talk About… How to Claim UIF

Employer Issue of the Day:

“So how do I actually claim my UIF?”

UIF used to be a nightmare of forms and queues. Luckily, the process has modernised. Here’s the quick guide I always give employees:

Step 1: Confirm Qualification

Ask: Do you qualify?

An employee can claim UIF when:

  • They are retrenched
  • The employer terminated their employment
  • The contract ends (e.g. Fixed term)
  • The employee goes on maternity leave, or
  • The employee becomes ill or temporarily unfit for work

Step 2: Register / Log In

Employees register via: uFiling.co.za

https://ufiling.labour.gov.za/uif/login

(It’s the official UIF online claims portal)

Step 3: Upload Documents

Depending on the type of claim, they must upload (examples):
✔ ID or Passport                                          ✔ Bank confirmation
✔ Salary schedule                                        ✔ UI-19 (from employer)
✔ Service termination documents            ✔ Medical certificate (if illness/maternity)

Step 4: Submit Claim Type

Main claim types include:
➡️ Unemployment                                      ➡️ Reduced Hours
➡️ Illness                                                      ➡️ Adoption
➡️ Maternity

Step 5: Processing + Payment

UIF assesses the claim and pays out monthly, not once-off, based on prior salary and contribution history.

Timeframes? Is UIF fast? Sometimes yes, sometimes painfully not.
Set expectations realistically — 6 to 12 weeks is common.

Two common mistakes to warn employees about:

  • Starting a new job stops UIF (UIF is for income loss)
  • Not applying within 12 months of losing a job (Claims expire)

When employees know the process, stress drops — and HR avoids endless follow-up questions that could have been answered upfront.
